Circumstances is one of those records that comes from a vulnerable place. Open and emotive, autodealer has recorded a masterpiece on par with the likes of Tim Hecker, Stars of the Lid, Four Tet, and so many other greats. Circumstances is a tour de force prompted by the artist’s experience taking care of elderly parents over a long period of time, losing them, and then having to move on with life with little space to grieve.

Circumstances is autodealer’s 6th full length, and third for Somewherecold. The culmination of almost 3 years of effort, Circumstances is a difficult record to pin down. It sees autodealer exploring new sonic territory, while also echoing the earliest days of the project. What began as a one man guitar-and-effects operation has, over the course of just over twenty years, turned into the laptop driven experiment of the last few releases.

Circumstances sees the focus shifted back onto sound and experimentation and away from beats and structure; autodealer is finally embracing his post rock and ambient roots. It might get loud. Once again mastered by Jason Lamoreaux and with artwork by the incredible Jen Cleary, Circumstances is autodealer’s most ambitious release yet.
