OUT NOW – A.M. Feelgood: Albatross (Somewherecold Records, 2020)

A.M. Feelgood is made of four Austin bandmates: Hunter Whitehorn (drums), Jake Reading (guitar), Chris Norfolk (guitar), & Danny Johnson (bass). On Albatross, their sophomore full-length, they combine a mature combination of other post-rock bands before them while having their own sound. Moving from the dynamics of This Will Destroy You and Mogwai to the ferocity of Russian Circles, the quartet captures something new. The album begins with “An Angler Tries His Luck At Lily Lake” which is the sort of challenge that a band like Godspeed! You Black Emperor might present in protest to the world while playing with gigantic walls of sound and masterfully placed melodic volume dynamics.

Not just another “Post-Rock” band, A.M. Feelgood has built something special while paying homage to the predecessors on whose shoulders they stand upon. “Water Politics”, the first single released in 2019, demonstrates the musical prowess of the band with careful guitar arrangements and driving percussion. Definitely an earworm, A.M. Feelgood are masterful at telling sonic stories, which is exactly what instrumental music should be about.

Albatross was originally released on November 25, 2019 and now Somewherecold Records are releasing the album in the form of a physical copy on limited edition CD (100 copies). This is Somewherecold Records first post-rock band release. I hope the fans will make more post-rock band signings viable!
