My Education‘s music has been a part of my life for a very long time. Since the release of 5 Popes in 2001, I’ve been a fan of this ultimately talent group of musicians. Their eighth full-length, Schiphol, was recently released and it’s another great and welcome addition to their catalog. As fans of the band, we at Somewherecold are proud to premiere their newest video from Schiphol. It’s a poignant and thought provoking stop motion video for the finale to the album entitled “Reprise (Coordinates)”. It’s a tender piece that plays off the melodies in the track “Coordinates” earlier in the album and it’s laden with a sort of sadness conveyed brilliantly through the use of a cascading piano line, weeping guitars, and deftly executed viola. A friend of the band, Brayden Jackson, directed the video and, utilizing Lego mini-figurines, he really captures the somberness of the piece. A commentary on the horrors of war, Jackson‘s work, along with the music, is hard hitting and emotive. Further, the use of Stormtroopers as one side of the conflict may point to the encroaching threat of fascism felt in many places on the planet. It is, at the end of the day, a gorgeous interpretation of this beautiful piece of music.
