FEATURED TRACK: Pia Fraus – That’s Not All (Seksound, 2017)
by Jason
It’s no secret that I’m incredibly excited about the new Pia Fraus album on the horizon. I’ve even started a retrospective series on their albums starting with Wonder What It’s Like. As a dreampop band that started in the early 2000’s, I consider the band important in the overall trajectory of the history of dreampop. Underappreciated and perhaps unknown to some, this Estonian band proves to have been genius on their first outing in 2001 and continue to be so even today. Their newest track, “That’s Not All”, will be the last song, and therefore the finale, of their first full-length in almost a decade. This “single edit” tantalizes as it teases an incredible LP to come. Returning for the single are Eve Komp (vocals, synths, metallophone), Kärt Ojavee (synths), Rein Fuks (guitars, vocals, percussion), Reijo Tagapere (bass), and Margus Voolpriit (drums) as well as former members Joosep Volk directing the video for “That’s Not All” and Kristel Eplik returning on backing vocals.
“That’s Not All” begins with guitars immediately giving the tone of the piece as they warble and warp over decidedly bright and punchy percussion. Vocals float over synths and light bass work, mixed with various guitars playing off of one another. Komp and Fuks‘ vocal harmonies are better than ever, giving “That’s Not All” this gorgeous pop delicacy. As Pia Fraus releases more singles, it becomes clear that their next album may be their best yet. Take a listen to the newest release from the legendary Pia Fraus and pre-order the EP, which includes remixes from Airiel, Galaktlan, Ulrich Schnauss, Picnic, and Mahogany. The That’s Not All EP will be released on May 29, 2017 on digital and limited edition CD.
