A Night at Trees in Dallas, TX with This Will Destroy You – March 3, 2017
by Jason
It was a mildly warm night in Dallas, TX when I drove over to Deep Ellum to see This Will Destroy You at Trees. I had my interview questions in hand to meet up with members of the band and get the skinny on what was going on with their, hopefully, forthcoming record, their recording processes, and other things. I met with founding member Jeremy Galindo to chat before they went on stage (the interview will be posted soon). Having been a fan for a long time and never seen them live, my expectations were high and, quite frankly met. This was in spite of technical difficulties Chris King had as his guitar string broke on the first song and the back-up guitar was also not working at the time. In spite of all this, the band put on a stellar performance with the huge peaks their music reaches and the quiet, seemingly effortless moments they espouse. Their set began with the quiet and slow “Mighty Rio Grande”, painting a cinematic entry for this band that are masters at sound pictures and volume control. The guitar tones were brilliant, the percussion intricate and solid, and the bass work just perfect. Here’s the set list.
Mighty Rio Grande (This Will Destroy You)
Quiet (Young Mountain)
War Prayer (Another Language)
Dustism (Another Language)
Little Smoke (Tunnel Blanket)
The set spanned their career LP releases and was, as I would expect, an incredible set. It fell a bit short because of the technical issues. The band told me afterward that the particular string that broke was integral to some songs, so they had to cut one. That said, go out and see them! They are incredible live!
